Duties include but are not limited to:
Prior to surgical procedures, independently sets up the sterile field with all required instrumentation, supplies, and medications During surgical procedures, organizes and handles all instrumentation, supplies, and medications on the sterile field Maintains aseptic technique Verifies surgical count accuracy Maintains a clean, safe environment Plans and discusses procedures with surgical professionals Communicates independently with patient and staff Assists with maintaining OR equipment Assists surgical team members with quality improvement activities Possess physical ability to stand for long periods of time, frequent moving, and lifting of patients and equipment required. Promotion Potential:

For the GS 5 At least one (1) full year of specialized experience. Specialized experience includes assisting with the preparation and protection of sterile fields during surgery; monitoring and maintaining aseptic techniques throughout surgical procedures; handling medical instruments, supplies and equipment during surgical procedures; performing proper cleaning techniques, as well as the proper handling and rotation of sterile supplies; handling contaminated items, quality control, and personal hygiene, using knowledge of universal precautions and implementing infection control policies and procedures. OR Successful completion of a full 4-year college course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position or an internship in course matter that must include courses directly related to the work of the Surgical Technician position such as anatomy and physiology, surgical technology, aseptic techniques, etc. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. OR Combinations of successfully completed college level education and specialized experience, as described above, which meet the total experience requirements for this grade level. The education portion must include 4 year college courses directly related to the work of the Surgical Technician position. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. For the GS 6 Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS 6 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS 5. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. AND At least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-5) in the Federal Service that has given me the particular knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform the duties of a Surgical Technician. Specialized experience includes assisting with the preparation and protection of sterile fields during surgery; monitoring and maintaining aseptic techniques throughout surgical procedures; handling medical instruments, supplies and equipment during surgical procedures; performing proper cleaning techniques, as well as the proper handling and rotation of sterile supplies; handling contaminated items, quality control, and personal hygiene, using knowledge of universal precautions and implementing infection control policies and procedures. OR Successfully completed one-half year of graduate education (9 semester hours) or an internship in course matter that must include courses directly related to the work of the Surgical Technician position such as anatomy and physiology, surgical technology, aseptic techniques, etc. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. OR Combinations of successfully completed graduate level education and specialized experience, as described above, which meet the total experience requirements for this grade level. The education portion must include graduate courses directly related to the work of the Surgical Technician position. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. For the GS 7 Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-07 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-06. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. AND Applicants must have One year of specialized experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of a Surgical Technician in the OR, i.e. experience in an operating room setting; setting up sterile field with required items for each procedure; handling specimens, supplies and equipment appropriately. To be creditable, experience must be equivalent to the next lower grade GS-6 OR Applicants may substitute 1 year graduate education directly related to work of the position for the GS-7; from an institution recognized by the US Department of Education. In order to qualify using education, you must provide a copy of your official transcripts (these will not be returned to you). OR Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at the GS-07 level. To calculate, first identify the percentage of required education you have earned (when substituting, you cannot use the first 60 semester hours that you earned). Then identify the percentage of required experience you possess. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify at the GS-07. For example, an applicant who has 9 semester hours of graduate level education (i.e. 50% of graduate education required) and 6 months of creditable specialized experience (i.e. 50% of the required experience) would equal 100% of the required experience for the position. Note:

Physical Requirements:
This position requires long periods of standing with few breaks, as well as lifting, bending, positioning patients, and some movement of cumbersome equipment. Good body mechanics, personal stamina, and excellent powers of concentration are necessary to participate in lengthy procedures. The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
