Industrial Hygienist

The Industrial Hygienist conducts complete evaluations of work operations involving potentially hazardous environmental conditions, analyzes findings, and recommends corrective measures and controls. Evaluations are conducted in the Medical Center and satellite locations (i.e., CBOCs and OPCs) located within the North Florida/South Georgia VA Health System. Evaluations may include chemical health contact; and physical hazards such as noise, heat and ionizing and non-ionizing radiation. Major duties include but are not limited to:
Plans and conducts complete evaluations of work operations involving potentially hazardous environmental conditions, analyzes findings, and recommends corrective measures and controls Performs, organizes and directs on-site surveys and investigations in offices, laboratories, warehouses, operating rooms, engineering shops, and conducts literature search to determine nature and severity of hazards present. Using standard chemical and physiological sampling techniques and procedures accumulates the information and materials required for laboratory analysis and evaluation. Develops policies, programs and procedures designed to improve Occupational Health and Employee Compensation Act Claims (FECA) Recommends or prescribes controls to eliminate or modify physical conditions, operations or other factors which may result in traumatic injury to person or damage to property Prepares technical reports identifying health hazards and recommending measures for their reduction or elimination Work Schedule:

Applicants who are current Federal employees and have EVER held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For this GS-11 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-09. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. A SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note:

To qualify for the GS 690 occupational series, ALL applicants must have one of the following:
a. A bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED) OR b. Bachelor's (or higher level) degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry (including organic chemistry) and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene. Note:
All science or engineering courses offered in fulfillment of the above requirements must be acceptable for credit toward the completion of a standard 4-year professional curriculum leading to a bachelor's degree in science or engineering at an accredited college or university. For engineering degrees to be acceptable, the curriculum must be in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) as a professional engineering curriculum. Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED) OR c. Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH). (COPY OF CERTIFICATE REQUIRED) AND In addition to meeting the basic requirements you must also meet one of the following to qualify at the GS-11 level:

Experience:
You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-09 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization that has equipped you with the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the duties of an Industrial Hygienist GS 690-11. Specialized experience for this position is defined as:

EDUCATION:
Successful completion of three years of progressively higher-level graduate education from an accredited college/university leading to a Ph.D. degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED) OR-COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION:
A combination of successfully completed higher-level graduate education (beyond the second year) and specialized experience which may be used to meet total experience requirements. NOTE:

Physical Requirements:
The work includes frequent inspections or surveys of industrial workplaces, requiring the employee to carry a considerable amount of equipment and involve a good deal of walking, standing, bending and climbing. Working Environment:
During inspections or surveys, there is regular exposure to all of the hazards and discomforts to which the workers are subjected. This may include toxic chemicals, physical stresses, and safety hazards. The employee must use a variety of protective equipment and clothing. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
